Russian rouble

The official currency for Russia is the Russian rouble (RUB) which is divided into 100 kopeks.

Currency regime

The Russian currency is managed in a basket against the major currencies. This was linked to the dollar, but the central bank also now includes the Euro in the basket and the Euro's proportion will increase.

Commercial rates

As at January 26th 2006, the rouble was trading around 27.9 against the US dollar, 34.2 against the Euro and 49.8 against Sterling.

Tourist rates

On January 26th 2006 the rouble was valued at around 47.3 against Sterling.  For 1 UK pound you will, therefore, receive around 47.3 roubles.

Travellers cheques are not easy to cash, but should be taken in dollars or Sterling.

Important note. The import of roubles is prohibited. Cash should be taken in US dollars.
