Iranian rial
Iran officially uses the rial as the local currency. One rial is divided into 100 dinars.
Currency regime
The rial has some latitude to move against the dollar, but is close to being fixed with the authorities periodically devaluing the currency. There is no long a dual exchange rate in operation. The rial is not fully convertible.
Commercial rates
As at April 5th 2006, the rial was trading around 9,140 against the dollar, 11,224 against the Euro and 16,010 against Sterling.
Tourist rates
On April 5th 2006 the rial was valued at around 15,610 against Sterling. For 1 UK pound you will, therefore, receive around 15,610 rial.
Important note. The import and export of rial is limited to IRL500,000 (around GBP30). Travellers cheques cannot be exchanged in Iran and should not be taken.
Cash is best taken in Euros or US dollars.
