Dominican peso

The Dominican Republic officially uses the peso as the local currency. The lowest denomination is 1 peso.

Please note: The Dominican Republic should not be confused with the windward island of Dominica which uses the East Caribbean dollar.

Currency regime

The peso floats against major currencies, although there is considerable central bank management of the currency.

Commercial rates

On February 15th 2006, the peso was trading around 34.4 against the US currency, 40.9 against the Euro and 59.8 against Sterling.

Tourist rates

On February 15th 2006 the peso was valued at around 57.8 against Sterling.  For 1 UK pound you will, therefore, receive around 57.8 pesos.

Travellers cheques should be taken in US dollars.

Only 30% of pesos taken can be converted back into local currency. Additional cash should, therefore, be taken in US dollars.
